Women, drink, wealth, power… Do these make a man?
What is Man? - an RPG (role-playing game) theatre piece inspired by the Chinese classic,
The Water Margin - explores ideas of masculinity in Chinese culture from the days of classic literature till modern times today.
In the play, nine men take part in an audition for a gangster movie,
and their names happen to be the same as those of nine outlawed heroes from
The Water Margin.
Like their heroic counterparts in the classic,
the nine actors exhibit various aspects of “manly” behaviour as they jostle in the audition.
But their actions are not quite heroic.
As they begin to lose themselves in the RPG-underworld of the movie,
each struggles to assert his manhood, albeit in different ways,
and unwittingly reveals more about himself
- and that unique creature called man -
than intended.
Directed by Hong Kong’s eminent director Edward Lam,
and starring a cast of talented actors from Taiwan,
this production is produced by
National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center & Edward Lam Dance Theatre.
